Chapter 6: Rome &... The Senate!
(Part 2)
Tiberius shook his head, "No! It's not true! I am not the enemy! My family are not conspirators, traitors or sympathizers... I have always been loyal to Rome & to you my Caesar!"
Julius Caesar stared at the guards, "Take these other prisoners away until this procession has concluded at which time I shall make my final judgment!"
The Praetorians bowed respectfully & saluted him, "Yes my Emperor!"
Flavius stared at another guard, "Bring forth our first witness... Quintus Sertorius Curio, a Tribunus Laticlavius & Second in Command of the Northern Armies! Let it also be noted that he was a close friend of Tiberius & as such, shall be watched closely following this procession!"
As he was brought forwards Flavius stood in front of him & clasped his hands together, "Now then Quintus, you have been brought forth before this Council today in order to give evidence in relation to your former Commander, General & close friend, Tiberius Fabius Octavian! So, what I need to know from you is was there ever a time during the campaign whereby the General acted in such a way that could be construed as... malicious or of ill-intent towards the legions themselves!?"
Quintus stared at Tiberius as Flavius squinted his eyes, "Well, was there?"
He took a very deep breath & subtly nodded as Flavius started to smile widely, "Yes, there were times during the campaign in which I spoke to Tiberius & advised him that it would be better if we were to fall back to Rome itself, rather than risk facing utter annihilation given how the campaign was unfolding..."
"I see & how did Tiberius react when you had bespoken these exact words to him?"
"He was outraged..."
"Outraged!?"
"Yes, he said that if we were to return home in disgrace that the reputation of Rome itself would be called into question, nevermind the might of our legions & our ability to counter any kind of threat we faced!"
"I see, so according to your recollections, he refused your counsel & was adamant that you should remain?"
"Yes!"
"And at what period of time was this discussion made!?"
"When we had already lost nearly half of our legions within the first days of arriving within the borders of Germania itself!"
"Really? So not only did he refuse to take your advice but he continued forwards regardless without even considering the very lives of his men who he directly commanded!?"
"Yes... but allow me to remind you that he stated the reputation of Rome was at stake!"
"Noted! And were there any other occurrences whereby his command could be called into question?"
"Yes we came across an encampment full of women & children who clearly belonged to the Germanic horde..."
"So what happened next?"
"They were allowed to live..."
Flavius stopped & raised an eyebrow, "Are you saying that you had prisoners & yet, did nothing with them?"
Tiberius suddenly spoke up, "It was my decision that these women & children not be harmed or used to further our own ends!"
Flavius stared at Quintus again, "So, what happened
